Panel “Women in Smart Communications” at CAMAD’23

The second edition of the “Women in smart communications (WiSC)” event took place in November 6, 2023, in the context of CAMAD’23. This WiSC workshop included Technical Talks delivered by female speakers from Academia and Industry whose expertise fall in the broad area of smart wireless communications networks. The event also hosted a women empowerment Panel Discussion on Empowering Women in the Digital Age: Redesigning Networks, Bridging Gaps, and Leading Change. The workshop was co-organised by the IEEE Women in Engineering UK&I and IEEE ComSoc UK&I.

O. Kolawole (SRUK) presented the talk “AI at the Edge for Smart Networks” and participated in the panel. Oluwatayo discussed that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be fundamental to achieving the goals of enabling a wide range of applications with extreme requirements across many verticals as mobile communication networks evolve to 6G. Then, the talk focused on AI at the Edge of B5G and 6G networks and discussed that, by incorporating learning and intelligence into edge computing which moves the computation closer to the source of the data, applications with extreme latency and computational requirements can be realized. The talk gave an overview of advanced solutions for both end-devices and infrastructure, which included SRUK’s research work in VERGE-WP3.

VERGE 3rd Plenary meeting

VERGE consortium held its 3rd Plenary meeting in Florence, 07-08/11/23, hosted by Thales – Ground Transportation Systems Italia. Good progress was achieved and very interesting technical discussions were held. Besides the members attending on-site, there were 10+ colleagues joining the meeting on-line. The meeting was closed by Carlo Piacenza, CEO of Thales – Ground Transportation Systems Italia, who emphasized the importance of autonomous transportation, as considered in VERGE in the autonomous tram use case.

SMARTCITY EXPO WORLD CONGRESS

Elli Kartsakli made the presentation entitled “Edge computing for safe and clean mobility in smart cities" at SMARTCITY Expo World Congress taking place in Barcelona 7-9 November 2023. The presentation described VERGE’s use case on autonomous tram.

IEEE-SOCC23

The 36th IEEE International System-on-chip Conference was held in Santa Clara (USA), September 5-8, 2023. Fred Buining, CEO/CTO from HIRO, attended the conference and made an invited presentation. Fred reports  shared understanding at the conference, which this year was about Chiplets for Edge: “The Chiplet Industry and supply chain will much more serve the needs of Edge infrastructure developers and end users, since GAFAM and Nvidia will develop their own chiplets, and server OEM’s (HPE, Supermicro, Dell, Lenovo etc.) will only procure general purpose SOC’s and SOM’s to serve mass markets. The edge will have many niche markets requiring custom combination of chiplets to process AI, security features, authentications, etc.”. Our VERGE project presentation was well received to address this complexity at the Edge, including the development of a cognitive engine. Maybe the future will bring us chiplets specifically designed to run a cognitive engine in an SOC, anywhere on the edge to cloud continuum”.
